Carnival Calabar 2026: Davido to headline as Cross River aims to beat last year's ₦19bn impact
Africa's biggest street party has started its countdown in the rain, with an Afrobeats superstar signed, a new theme and, for the first time, a public vote for Band of the Year.
Davido will headline Carnival Calabar 2026, the Cross River State Carnival Commission said on Sunday 18 October, as the first dry run of the festival wound through the streets of Calabar. The commission's chairman, Gabe Onah, told the crowd the singer had already confirmed, and that this year's edition should do better than the estimated ₦19 billion in social and economic value the state put on last December's.
A countdown in the rain
Rain fell on the flag-off, and the dancers carried on regardless. Deputy Governor Peter Odey, standing in for Governor Bassey Otu, told revellers the weather would not stop the carnival, and presented it as a way to bring in tourists, support local businesses and attract investment. Onah promised Davido would be in town to thrill the crowds, and said several other countries had shown interest in taking part, with talks still going on.
“We are really working hard to reintroduce the international segment because we are global.”
The biggest change this year sits in spectators' pockets. Anyone can now sign up online as a member of a carnival band and help pick the Band of the Year. Onah has likened it to supporting a Premier League club and to the public vote on Big Brother. Turnout, he said, could be anywhere between 10,000 and 52,000 revellers, depending on how many people the bands bring out.

Twenty years of Africa's biggest street party
The modern carnival dates from 2004, when the then governor Donald Duke set out to turn Cross River into a tourism and hospitality destination. Its great rival bands, among them Seagull, Passion 4, Masta Blasta, Bayside and Freedom, compete each year in themed costume, and four successive governors have backed it. Last December's 20th edition, themed "Traces of Time", was won by the Calas Vegas band, and Tiwa Savage played to a packed U. J. Esuene Stadium on the night of the main parade.
The 20th Edition of Carnival Calabar was more than a celebration; it was a statement of resilience, growth, and cultural continuity.
Effiong Ekpenyong, chairman of the Carnival Calabar & Festival Committee, to BusinessDay
This year's theme, "Rethinking Our Collective Destiny", is meant to speak of unity, equality and a shared humanity. Onah has also asked companies and private backers to put more money in, so the festival can keep growing and keep earning for the state.
