Grand Market in downtown Kingston, Jamaica: Christmas Eve, Thursday 24 December 2026
Sorrel, toys, music late into the night and the city's own Christmas tree: why Christmas Eve in downtown Kingston is the night to be home, and how to make the most of it.

Grand Market, the Christmas Eve street market Jamaicans have kept since the days of slavery, returns to downtown Kingston on Thursday 24 December 2026. From early on Christmas Eve until the small hours of Christmas morning, traders are given special permission to sell in places normally closed to trade, and the capital comes out for toys, new clothes, decorations and the food of a Jamaican Christmas, with music late into the night.
What makes Kingston's Grand Market special
Most parish capitals hold a Grand Market, but the capital's has a centrepiece. St William Grant Park, once Victoria Park, is home to the city's municipal Christmas tree, a tradition the National Library of Jamaica dates to 1952, which the mayor switches on each December. In 2025 Mayor Andrew Swaby lit it on 9 December, and for Christmas Eve the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation announced that Stone Love, one of Jamaica's best-known sound systems, would play the park.
“This is our way of giving vendors and shoppers a little of that Grand Market feeling in a safe, controlled space.”
The 2026 line-up has not been announced. Last year the corporation set out its Christmas plans at the tree lighting in early December, so check its notices before you go.
What to buy and eat
This is where Kingston finishes its Christmas shopping. Stalls and tarpaulins fill with things rarely seen the rest of the year, beside clothes and shoes for Christmas Day, decorations and toys, while downtown shops dress their windows with lights and offers. Look out for:
- Sorrel, the deep-red Christmas drink, best with a slice of rum-soaked Christmas cake.
- Gungo peas, for Christmas rice and peas or a soup made with the ham bone.
- Yellow yam and yampi, the sweet yam kept as a seasonal treat.
- Roast and boiled corn, corn soup, snow cones and cotton candy, the street treats Grand Market has long been known for.
- Pinda cakes, grater cakes and peppermint sticks, the old Grand Market sweets.

Plan your visit
Christmas Eve itself is the busiest day: many Jamaicans were once paid only the day before Christmas, Amina Blackwood Meeks told The Gleaner, so it has long been the last big chance to shop. Come in daylight for the best choice, then stay as the music builds after dark. Last December the mayor asked traders to keep pavements and roads clear, and the corporation said it was working with taxi operators to find them parking, so take a taxi or a lift downtown and do the market on foot. Bring the children if you like: for many families it is a day out together.
Where the tradition comes from
Grand Market goes back to slavery, when enslaved Africans were given a few days off at Christmas. They dressed in their finest, sang and danced until morning, and sold surplus produce and handmade crafts, a small freedom that grew into an island-wide festival. Downtown Kingston once added a Christmas Day promenade down King Street, now gone, and a Santa Claus parade down King Street to Harbour Street that has since dwindled; Jonkonnu masqueraders now appear mostly at cultural events.

Grand Market is both a joy and a tribute to our inventiveness, our determination, our innovation, as it is a remembrance of those brutal days on the plantation.
